September 2015 IssueBy: Genesis V., 10th Grader
On September 8, Gertz held its first NP conferences of this year. NP stands for not passing and grade wise is a 1.99 and any grade below that. The NP conferences were invitation only so anyone who had good academic standing, 2.35 and higher, did not have to attend. In a nutshell, the NP conferences are when students with one NP or more had to attend a meeting with their teachers. We had 142 of our students invited to the conferences but sadly only 90 showed up. If you are invited take the the opportunity to talk about your grades with your teachers and your parents. The conference was a chance for you to share any of your concerns with your teachers and get it cleared up. For anyone who attended your parents did get hours for going. This was a great opportunity for our parents to be involved with our students and their academic life so next time there are conferences bring your parents. Let’s work on getting those grades up Pumas, remember “Gertz for Success”. August 2015 IssueWelcome Back to SchoolBy: Erick V., 10th Grade
Welcome back all Gertz students we hope you all had a great summer vacation and I hope we all have done our summer assignments to prevent staying after school. We should give a good welcome to all our new 9th graders and new seniors because 12th grade is an exciting and important year. However, being a senior is the most stressful year stated by a current senior. She shared with us that, “ being a senior is one the hardest grades because we have to worry about fulfilling certain components to apply to college for example, writing personal statements, researching colleges that we would be applying to, and keeping up with grades as well with a bunch of AP homework.” In addition, two of the hardest grades are 11th and 12th grade. Things they focused on are the ACTs, junior portfolio, and keeping up with grades. During the week also a 9th grade student was asked,“What are your first impressions of being in 9th grade?” and his response was, “I feel a good vibe being a freshmen at Gertz in which this school will help me get to college and learn or experience new things in Gertz.” Myself currently a sophomore, I think that 9th grade was a difficult year because it was a fast transition from middle school to high school since I had to adapt to a new environment. Finally I hope that we have a successful and fun year where we all make these high school experiences memorable. |
Lexile Level Testing
By: Genesis V., 10th Grade
School has started and as a whole, the school is once again Lexile Testing. During the school year, the school takes the Lexile Test a total of three times. Why do we Lexile Test? The Lexile Level Test helps assess the students in order to see where everyone is in term of reading levels. With the test, the teachers are able to help improve the score of the students to get them ready to read at a college level, once they graduate. As long as you try your best on the Lexile Test, you should be able to get an accurate score on your reading level. Lexile testing set growth goals for everyone and make sure everyone is going at his or her pace. |
Back to School NightBy: Litzy G., 10th Grade
On August 11, 2015, Gertz had their back to school event. Back to school night is a good opportunity for parents to get to know their students' teachers. It is also, as Ms. Goldbaum stated, "...A way for the parents to get an idea of their children's day." Back to school night is also, "A good way for the school and community to come together," like Ms. Finch said. Many parents attended with their children to get a better understanding of each class, and what Gertz is all about. The question most people may ask is why is it important to have a back to school night? Well Ms.Gandhi, the tenth grade english teacher has the answer, she states "It's important to know that there is a person behind a syllabus or a schedule." It is important because the parents should know that there is someone to talk to concerning their children’s grades. Overall, Gertz's back to school night was a success. |
