One Simple Question: "Is Coffee Bad for You?"By: Jimmy M., 10th Grade
One Tuesday morning I was confronted by our principal, Mr. Waller, because of the fact that he saw me drinking a cup of iced coffee while other students were drinking 'healthier' choices such as orange juice, water, apple juice, etc. In this rather dragged out conversation, the most that I picked up from our loving principal was that, apparently, coffee had various negative effects on the human body, and was an overall unhealthy decision for a growing fifteen year old student. But then I had one simple question in mind, which in turn had led to a seemingly endless string of questions, "Is coffee really such a bad thing? If it is, why is it a bad thing, and what negative effects can coffee have on the growing human body?" One question led to the other, and with that, my research on both coffee's negative and positive effects on the growing human body had begun. Now one thing is certain, coffee definitely has a number of negative effects on the body, according to many different studies, but the number of benefits that coffee has to offer completely outweighs those negative outcomes. Let's start on a positive note, would you believe me if I told you that consistent consumption of coffee can help prevent various forms of cancer? I know, I wouldn't believe myself either, but what you're hearing isn't a lie, according to an article on LiveScience, various research and many recent studies show that coffee can help protect the human body from various forms of cancer--- this includes skin cancer, liver cancer, aggressive prostate cancer and a type of breast cancer called estrogen receptor-negative breast cancer. While we're on the topic of preventing diseases, according to an article on LiveScience as well as Time Magazine, studies show that coffee is capable of reducing the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. In a review of twenty-eight studies performed by Diabetes Care, researchers found that drinking roughly six cups of coffee, caffeinated or decaffeinated, can help reduce the risk of developing type two diabetes by over 30%. Not good enough positive effects for you? Listen to this: coffee helps ward off depression in women, stroke, cognitive decline in associated with Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, and even helps lessen overall pain during exercise, this is according to Joseph Castro, a science journalist who's written various articles for LiveScience. I'm not sure about everyone else, but in general, that's a large area of benefits individuals can get from drinking coffee alone. Of course, just like all good things in life, overconsumption of anything has its various negative consequences-- coffee is no exception. One of the most negative impacts that coffee can offer is the release of LDL. Fortunately, the only types of coffee that actually causes this release of "bad cholesterol" are unfiltered coffee such as Turkish coffee or coffee made with French press, as stated in an article on Times Magazine. Studies also show that women who have more than five cups of coffee per day may have more trouble getting pregnant with in vitro fertilization than women who don't. The caffeine in the coffee itself has a number of negative effects as well, these include insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, stomach issues, rapid heartbeat, and muscle tremors, this is all according to Mayo Clinic. Now this may seem like a large number of negatives, but they are very much outweighed by the amount of positive effects that coffee may leave on the human body. One thing to note is that all of these negative impacts are from the over-consumption of coffee, meaning that if you only drink a couple cups of coffee every other day, then you should be aye okay. Do I suffer from insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, stomach issues, rapid heartbeat, or muscle tremors? No, I don't suffer from these negative effects because of the simple fact that I do not drink coffee as a means to serve an addiction towards caffeine. There have been countless stories where individuals simply cannot go on with their days without drinking coffee. This is because those individuals have an addiction towards caffeine. Keep in mind that when you are drinking coffee, as you are while drinking ordinary medicine or taking pills, you are putting yourself at risk of developing an addiction towards the caffeine in the coffee. It is perfectly fine if you only rely on coffee as a stimulus to get you energized with enough to get you passed those sleep-deprived nights and mornings-- but it's a completely different story if you can't go on with your day without consuming at least six cups of coffee. So, is coffee really "bad for you?" In a nutshell, coffee is bad for those who develop an addiction towards it, and as a result, consume large quantities of it within a single fixed period of time. As for those who drink roughly half a cup to a cup of coffee every other day, they're perfectly fine-- coffee will not heavily impact them in a negative way. Make considerate decisions, be aware of the limit that your body can handle when it comes to coffee. You know what they say, a coffee a day can help reduce human decay! Drink safely, drink responsibly, a message from the Nerds. |

BullyingBy: Ibenias M., 10th Grade
Every school faces problems whether its school funds, too many students in a class, etc. but, the main one in all schools is bullying. It is everywhere not only in school, but you can find anyone getting bullied. Bullying has been around for a while, and it isn’t a good thing, we just ask ourselves why does it happen and what can be done. Bullying occurs mainly because the bully has been a victim of being bullied and causes him to do it to someone else, which is creating a chain that goes on. Others bully people without knowing it, and there are some cases where situations are just a miss understanding. At the end victims are the ones getting hurt, and there are ways of fixing these types of situations. When confronted by a bully your best option is to leave immediately seeking an adult’s help. An adult will always be there to assist students with the problem. You shouldn’t be afraid to tell any adult especially a school staff. Do not keep things to yourself as your only hurting yourself in not wanting the help. You don’t want the bully to continue purposely bully you. Stand up and don’t be afraid to ask for help. If you witness or know someone getting bullied help out the victim by the following: either by confronting the bully in a civil matter or by confronting an adult for assistance. If you are with a friend and he might have said something that might have hurt your feelings, and you know he probably didn’t mean it. The best option at this will confront your friend politely telling him how you feel on what he/she might have said. This is letting you communicate in a proper manner with your friend anyone who might have offended you. And finally if you think someone said something about you that hurt your feelings or made you feel offended. Make sure to confront the person and communicating with that person or the best option an adult. Again don’t be afraid to confront the person, always seek for assistance, as adults are there help you in the best possible way. By: Luis G., 10th Grader Now that we are in the month of September, there have been some new things, and especially new fashion trends. There have been some notable fashion trends that have been appearing and disappearing, while some are returning since their hiatus on the streets. One of them is the “bucket hat.” It is has a shape like a bucket and forms a perimeter around the top part of the head. Another big trend that is seen is the use of large sweaters with nothing else that is retro with them. The colors are usually light, with the sweaters sometimes being a little big than the wearer. This makes thee sweater shine a lot more than any other clothing on the wearer. Skinny jeans also haven’t gone anywhere. Skinny jeans are pants that fit in almost anyone with slim legs. The color and size vary. If not invested in the right pair, the style may go wrong. Some, however, have gone out of style. But all of these trends are only for September, as more trends are yet to come in October. This good for retail stores with clothes such as Macy's, JC penney, and GAP. |
